Insects for Food, Feed, Waste Management and Beyond: From Trash to Gold
On October 2nd 2024, in the framework of the CIPROMED project, the project coordinator, Professor Athanassiou Christos of the University of Thessaly, delivered an insightful presentation titled “Insects for Food, Feed, Waste Management and Beyond: From Trash to Gold” at the online event held by the COST Action project CA21134 – Towards zer0 Pesticide AGRIculture : European Network for sustainability (T0P-AGRI-Network).
The presentation provided an in-depth exploration of the role insects can play in revolutionizing food production, feed sourcing, and waste management, contributing significantly to a sustainable and circular economy.
Professor Athanassiou highlighted how insects can be utilized as an alternative food and feed source, offering potential solutions to global food security challenges while demonstrating their innovative role in waste management.
The transformation of organic waste into valuable byproducts—essentially turning “trash into gold”—was a central theme of the presentation. Following the presentation, a fruitful and interesting conversation tookplace among participants.
