Online presentation to the students of the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences

The project coordinator, Professor Christos Athanassiou (University of Thessaly, Greece) recently delivered an online presentation to the students of the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. Invited by the university, Professor Athanassiou’s talk was titled “Insects for Food, Feed, and Waste Management: Feed the Future.”

This presentation, aligned with the scope of the CIPROMED project, provided information concerning the transformative role of insects, particularly species such as the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), in sustainable food and feed production.

Professor Athanassiou discussed how insect-based systems can efficiently convert organic waste into high-protein biomass, addressing food security while reducing environmental impact. He emphasized the circular economy model, where insect farming not only contributes to feeding a growing global population but also aids in waste reduction and resource optimization. Additionally, he highlighted CIPROMED‘s broader objectives, including exploring insect-derived materials for medical and biotechnological applications.

The presentation offered students insights into how insects can drive sustainable solutions in food systems, waste management, and beyond, showcasing their potential to “feed the future.”
